LUCILLE GANTT

Art and Ceramics at Castle Hill

Lucille joined the Bronx Senior Photo League classes at Castle Hill Senior Center in March 2019. Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Lucille was not able to continue the remote photography classes online and over the phone. The photos below were taken before COVID-19 hit New York City. Lucille's photographs show the ceramics and art classes taught by Matthew Burcaw held at Castle Hill Senior Center. Below is Lucille's artist statement she wrote about her project in Fall 2019.

My photo story is about two amazing classes here at Castle Hill Senior Center. This class meets every Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The instructor’s name is Mathew Burcaw and he has been with us for two years teaching the seniors ceramics and for the last two months an art class. In the following photos you will observe pictures of Mr. Burcaw teaching both activities to the seniors. During ceramics class, you learn how to form shapes and then paint them; before painting the ceramics you have to fire it in the kiln. When Mr. Burcaw teaches the art class, he brings in different paintings for the seniors to choose from and then explains the procedure of painting on canvas with acrylic paint. The first procedure he demonstrates is about how to block out the shapes and then fill it in with the details. The majority of the seniors have learned these techniques at the center. One thing for sure “You are never too old to learn”.
